Learners' Lives Model
Video
I came across a workshop presentation today that may be of interest to the Network's online community!
The Oregon Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ORTESOL) recently held a Spring workshop session on working with literacy students in low level ESL classes.
The focus of the workshop was on using the Learners Lives' as Curriculum model developed by Dr. Gail Weinstein.
"The "Learners' Lives as Curriculum" model uses learner texts for discussing themes of interest to learners. A thematic unit provides learners with personal stories of others like themselves, along with an opportunity to respond to those stories, generate their own narratives, and prepare for a collective project while learning specific language skills and strucutres."
The ORTESOL workshop presentation guides you through a process of using this model with your class. W Th
The Network is extremely grateful to be recognized as one of the "Favorite Resources for Professional Development" that are listed in this presentation.
Are you familiar with the Learners Lives' model? Do you use a similar model with your ESL literacy class?

Workshop
I just read the powerpoint from the workshop: Learners' Lives as Curriculum. Harris' presentation resonates with me because she talks about beginning with a meaningful story. She then tells different ways to use this familiar text as a building block for literacy development. So she goes from the whole to the parts to the whole again. Great stuff! Thanks for sharing this link.
