Poetry Slam Part 2
Video
Jen Kunlire's poetry slam was a success not only for what took place in the workshop, but also for the follow up activities it generated.
Through various activities Jen got the students to find ways of expressing themselves and putting emotion into their work. There were introductions, group storytelling, rhyming activities and team poems. Jen was able to get full participation from all the learners and even the shyest of learners were confidently reciting the poems they created.
As a follow up activity, my learners wrote thank you notes to Jen. Here is what some of them said:
"Thank you for the wonderful presentation on poetry. My favourite part was when we all sounded like animals."
"My favourite part was when we made a story together."
"I learned lots of things about poetry. I didn't know before how to do poetry."
"My favourite part was when we make sad, angry and happy vocals."
"I like when we rhymed and did rhythm."

Learner Response
Hi Don,
My learners really enjoyed this session too. My favourite piece of feedback was, "I liked the poetry because I understand that everyone can make he/she own poem. Once you know how to make your own poem you can use it in alot of ways...In my culture poetry used everywhere...Poetry is connects you to the other person. If I know how to write my own poem I should become a fames [famous]."
Many of my learners were impressed by their own hidden poetic talents. A great workshop and I will definitely use spoken word in the classroom in the future.
Heidi.
