Poetry Slam Part 3
Video
After the poetry slam, my learners wrote group poems as a follow up activity. Here are the simple guidelines they had for creating their poem:
- Create a team name
- Phonetically write the word "home" in your language
- Include images from your home country
- Include images from Canada
Here are the two amazing poems that they created:
We Are
We are Rhythm
We are beteseb
We are gander
We are pach
We are quri
We are people pulling coffee beans
We are birdsong in the morning
We are hot rice and goat
We are the smell that comes from trees and flowers
We are the December snow
We are "O Canada"
We are pizza that is everywhere
We are perfume that everyone likes to smell
We are home
We Are
We are mixed elements
We are ghar
We are nha
We are hoh
We are bate
We are may zon
We are people celebrating for four days
We are the whispering wind
We are the taste of hot biryani in the large pan
We are the smell of noon
We are the stars who shine at night
We are sound of music that keeps us going
We are the joyful taste that keeps us wanting more
We are the fresh smell of warm Tim Horton's on a cold day
We are home

Wow. You should see if those can be published in some kind of learner newsletter. Those poems are so inspirational.
Poetry Slam 3
Hi Heidi,
Thanks for sharing this amazing experience you had with our Bridge learners. It it so great to have guest speakers and get students to produce/ create something with them or after them. Isn't it incredible to see, given the opportunity, how our learners can express themselves in a different way or in a way that they are not so familiar with? I have done something similar with my learners where they had to write an acrostic poem about Canada. It was very touching to witness how our learners perceive Canadians and Canada. They all have very positive things to say. They were very glad to be given the opportunity to voice their opinions, just like in the example you have given here.
Our learners are hidden gems, just waiting to be discovered ....
