There are core skills that are taught in an ESL literacy classroom: reading, writing, language development, strategy use, and in the CLB Foundation Phase, pre-literacy skills and concepts.

In this section, we look at some of the methods and techniques in teaching these core skills in an ESL literacy classroom.

There are many ways to approach teaching, and not every possible method is examined here. The absence of a method does not necessarily mean it is ineffective or unsuitable.
