Formulaic sentence

A sentence that follows a simple or repetitive structure, written independently by a learner. When learners begin to write at the sentence level, the sentences are often formulaic. (e.g. I like apples. I like bananas. I like cherries). This allows learners to express ideas or information without having to focus on accurate grammatical structures.

Free writing

Independent writing, often for the expression of personal opinions or ideas. Free writing provides learners with an opportunity to experiment with their writing. Free writing builds writing fluency, provides learners with experiences of writing for non-functional purposes and builds a habit of writing frequently. In all Phases of ESL Literacy classes, free writing needs to be supported and contextualized.
