Online Library

This resource manual is aimed at helping women with ESL literacy needs increase their literacy skills and integrate into Canadian life. The manual consists of two main sections: culture and its influence on the literacy process for learners and curriculum guidelines. No date.

Classroom Resources

This website supports vocabulary development through the use of audio and visuals. The content is offered in eleven languages, allowing students to choose to have a first language (if offered) translation of vocabulary being studied as they move their mouse over English words or graphics.

This is a site for learners to use at a computer. It has photographs and says the word aloud, so that learners can increase their vocabulary.

Assessment

This paper focuses on ESL literacy learner assessment. Wrigley speaks to standardized ESL literacy testing to reflect what ESL literacy learners are able to do. She defines alternative assessment and gives examples of some promising alternative approaches. Published 1992.

Supporting LIFE

This site has information on how violence impacts learning. There is an interactive kit within the site. This kit is written for learners and includes annimations, a song, audio and activities on coping with difficulties. It would be appropriate for Phase III learners. 

Bow Valley College Publications

Essentials for LIFE content is based on Learning for LIFE: An ESL Literacy Handbook. The handbook is designed for instructors, program coordinators and other stakeholders in ESL literacy. It is a practical handbook, outlining promising practices in program considerations, strategies for the classroom and four different levels of ESL literacy. 

Online Library

Reimer describes her formal study of the learning strategies of her low literacy Hmong learners. She affirms that learners are already using a number of learning strategies and that instructors can help them use more by breaking each strategy down into manageable pieces.
